Here are some great ski resorts based around Sydney that are great at providing a break from city living. The ski resorts of New South Wales are some of the very best in Australia, and the beauty of them is that they are only a couple of hours drive from Sydney.
Whether you prefer to ski downhill, snowboard or just breathe in the mountain air, these resorts are perfect for everybody.
Thredbo
The most famous ski resort and destination in Australia has to be Thredbo. Not only is it the most popular it is also the highest at 2,037 meters. It also has the largest vertical downhill drop, at 672 meters.
Two-thirds of the resort is dedicated to intermediate skiers, and there are more than fifty runs to choose from. Although most are at intermediate level there are enough beginner and expert runs to keep everybody happy.
Many people flock to Thredbo to enjoy the activities off the mountain, and charming Thredbo Village has many restaurants and live music venues.
Perisher
If size matters in the skiing world, then Perisher is the largest ski resort in the southern hemisphere. There are more than 70 runs in the massive 1,245 hectares of the Perisher Valley, and it is a skiers paradise.
Pro’s, intermediate and beginners can all find good skiing in Perisher and if you like snowboarding then there is plenty of scope for you too. Perisher has a really good apres-ski scene as well with many mountainside restaurants to take advantage of.
Charlotte Pass
Charlotte Pass is one of the highest ski resorts in Australia at 1,760 meters above sea level. And for most of the winter it is covered in a thick blanket of snow. In many respects, it is a true alpine experience as there are not many crowds on the mountainside.
The gates at Perisher do not allow motor vehicles up to Charlotte Pass so only the keen lovers of snow venture up that high. Charlotte Pass is located in the picturesque Kosciuszko National Park.
Mount Selwyn
Mount Selwyn is perfect for beginners and intermediate skiers, and it is the perfect place to learn skiing, snowboarding, and other snow-related activities. It is not as big a ski resort than the others we have featured but it makes up in other areas such as the great variety of family activities that it offers.
Mount Selwyn is the only family owned and run ski resort in the Snowy Mountains, it offers two Snowtube Parks, Tobogganing and Cross Country Skiing.
All these great ski resorts are only a matter of hours drive from Sydney so you can combine a ski and city vacation.
